Fieldtrip program - Re-valuing our rangelands

Depart 1 pm from Hay Services Club on a circuit via Cobb Highway and Old Thelangerin Road.

TOUR STOPS:

  1. Kangaroo processing – Hay irrigation area
    Manager Ashley Neill will provide a tour of works and discuss the rationale for the industry
  2. Travelling Stock Route management - Horse and Jockey Reserve
    Peter O’Shannassy (LHPA Senior Ranger) will speak on travelling stock management including active management for biodiversity conservation as a result of funding from Commonwealth Biodiversity Fund.
  3. Revegetation by direct seeding – Horse and Jockey Reserve
    Bill Auldist Murrumbidgee CMA will demonstrate techniques using Hay Landcare Group direct seeding equipment.
  4. One Tree Experimental Area
    Soil Conservation Service revegetation experimental area (commenced 1951) now a vegetation reference area.

    Also the site of the One Tree Tank on the Wah Wah Stock and Domestic supply channel, part of the Landcare/CMA Wildlife Project.

  5. “Thelangerin Station”
    Owner Derek McFarland will discuss the Station current purchase and handover to NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.
  6. Thelangerin Rangeland Assessment Program monitoring site
    Deb Bate of Murrumbidgee CMA will demonstrate monitoring methods and identify species.
  7. Kalyarr National Park
    NPWS area manager Silvana Keating will discuss management of reserved country (formerly “Darcoola” Station until 2003) on the site where sandhills have been restored from boxthorn infestation.

Historian and raconteur Mr David Houston of “Budgewah” will provide local details and a historical perspective during the tour.

Return to Hay Services Club 6 pm

Dinner at 6.30pm for 7.00pm with keynote speaker Brendan Lay
